WELCOME TO
E.S.O.L.,
ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF
OTHER LANGUAGES
Greetings from Hélène
Boinet! Welcome to ISK and to Kenya!
ESOL is offered in Kindergarten all the way to Grade 5, and gives
support to students in reading, writing, and oral language. Each
class is 45 minutes long, and depending of her/his level, your
child may have more than one class a day. These classes happen
mostly during Language Arts times and Modern Language times.
Students who may require some support in English are assessed as
part of their application to ISK.
We currently have 35
students, coming from 15 different countries!
For each grade, we have students from the following countries:
Grade 1: Kuwait,
Québec, Denmark, Albania, Bulgaria
Grade 2: Spain,
Sweden, Denmark
Grade 3: Denmark,
Kuwait, South Korea, Israel, Niger, Québec, Botswana,
Thailand, Italy.
Grade 4: Sweden,
Bosnia, Albania
Grade 5: Sweden, South
Korea, China, Japan, Albania, Netherlands.
WELCOME
ABOARD!
I have been in Nairobi
for now 5 years. Before going to Kenya, my husband and I were in
the USA, teaching in North Carolina. I have a Master's Degree from
the University of Rennes, France, and a PGCE from Oxford
University, England. I have been teaching ESOL for the past 8
years and thoroughly enjoy it.
Towards the end of the first quarter the
ESOL department offers an ESOL forum for parents, which aim is to
inform them about what second language acquisition
entails. The term "second language" is used to
distinguish between first language and any language you may acquire
in addition to your first language.
